M’Chigeeng Immaculate Conception Church

May 23, 2013 by Glenn 1 Comment

This church combines aboriginal traditions and Catholic beliefs. It was designed to represent a tepee, a fire pit and the circle of life. Colourful paintings by local artist Leland Bell depict the Stations of the Cross, and magnificent carvings represent both Christ and the Great Spirit Kitche Manitou.

M’Chigeeng (pronounced shih-geeng), means “village enclosed by stepped cliffs”. The second-largest reserve on Manitoulin, it was settled in the mid-19th century when natives from Wikwemikong relocated there.
