Best picture I’ve seen of the Queen’s Hotel in Cannington. What a shame that the plan to build a replica of the building was scraped. Hopefully it will be resuscitated.
Do you know the owner of the hotel by any chance?
My great great grandfather John Henry Robinson Owned a Hotel In Cannington in 1921. Unfortunately I can not remember the name of the hotel.
My father George Makrygiannis used to own the old Queen’s Hotel building from the mid 80’s until the early 90’s.
His plans were to renovate the upper 2 floors into apartments with commercial use on the main floor. He always wanted to keep the original look.
I have memories of playing inside the old hoarded up building as a young kid. Those were good times.
The recession in the late 80’s into the early 90’s forced him to sell to the government for $300,000.
In turn, it was torn down and viola, what you see today
Alex Makrygiannis
Another detail about the Queen’s Hotel I remember, for the record. My father bought the Queen’s off an older fellow with the last name, Hollywood. He lived on the outskirts of Sunderland.

I remember George. He ran Smitty’s Restaurant on Cameron St in the mid 80s.
Ate there many times.
Hi Sean,
That is correct, he did. Fond memories growing up in Cannington as a young kid. The town was a very different place back then.
