Services and facilities are few and far between and motorists are advised to carry a full-sized spare tire (or two spare tires if they are an unusual size) as well as extra water and gas.

Construction of the Dempster Highway began in 1959 and was finally completed in 1978. It was named for Inspector William John Duncan Dempster of the RCMP.

Check out the Dempster Highway Travelogue is a comprehensive look at the road published in 2014 by the Yukon Government.
