Toronto's CNE

August 16, 2012 by Judy 6 Comments

Candy Shop at CNE 2010

The event has been going for over 130 years. The  CNE Artchives  found on the CNE website are worth checking out. I found a clip on The Monkees circa 1969.

CNE 2010 rollercoaster

A master magician and a hypnotist debut this year. Tessa Virtue & Scot Moir , Canada’s Olympic gold medal ice dancers are here. And back by popular demand, The Flowrider, Kids World, Aerial Acrobatics & Ice Show,  the Horseshow, the Casino and, of course, a crowd favourite, the Super Dogs. Food-wise, one of the fair’s featured snacks? Would you believe something called a bacon-covered funnel cake?

CNE 2010 swing ride

My favourite is the CNE midway. I first visited it back in 1964. The Beatles had just appeared on Ed Sullivan and I remember being so excited at winning a Beatles hat at one of the Midway booths. I rode my first Ferris Wheel ride then too.  My friend Deb and I and  two 10 year olds had a blast at last year’s midway. I enjoyed my annual CNE treat –  a waffle ice-cream sandwich, and then soaked up the scene with the Nikon. The colors were incredible especially against the overcast sky.

Ah, the Ex! We had the best of times as kids winning cheap stuffed toys, stuffing on corndogs and cinnamon-sugared tiny tim donuts, getting motion sick on rides. I used to come home, flop on the couch moaning and my mother would wonder what about any of this could possibly be considered a good time. And how we waited all year to subject ourselves to it! I haven’t been in a while and don’t think I could handle the current menu (saw bacon-wrapped deep-fried mars bars featured on the news) but your pics have got me nostalgic for a return visit. Thanks for the post, love the pics.

Glenn is a huge fan of those corn dogs. I got some crazy pics of him this year chowing one down. Thanks for dropping by. See ya on Twitter.

I’m actually a bit ashamed to admit that I have never been to the CNE even though we live less than half an hour from the Exhibition grounds. We always seem to be away on vacation while the Ex is on. I’m really going to have to make a point of taking my kids next summer so that we can say we have been!

We discovered if you go after 5pm, admission prices drop dramatically. The early evening is also a fabulous time to photograph the CNE particularly the midway’s bold colours. Thanks for dropping by.

Your CNE post brings back good memories of my 23 years in Toronto. The annual exhibition is always a highlight. Thanks for sharing.
