Tuktoyaktuk. Hardest. Drive. Ever.

June 19, 2018 by Glenn

Travel writer, bird watcher, now a veteran of the Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk highway, Carol Patterson arrives in Tuk …

This is the western Arctic’s version of Woodstock. These people travelled the Inuvik to Tuk highway before the rain today and decided (prudently) to enjoy their view of the Beaufort Sea rather than risk the slippery eel of a road the last thirteen kilometres have become. People shared strategies for timing their departure, having cheated disaster on their way in. Others chatted with local Inuit, amazed at the number of people arriving daily, but eager to share their culture. Lacking accommodation and having keys to an Impressive 7500 lb. Chevrolet Suburban I managed to make the trip both ways in one day although I couldn’t linger long.

Carol Patterson has arrived in Tuktoyaktuk at last. But what the heck is a Pingo?

Why, exactly, do they call this vehicle a Suburban?

Tuktoyaktuk is a LONG way from Costa Rica where these bananas were grown.
